• Air Travel Programs.
  If you have to travel by plane to get to your treatment center, there are a large number of programs that help patients obtain free or heavily discounted fares with commercial airlines and private pilots. All of the major airlines - as well as most of the smaller ones - have miles-for-charity programs in which frequent flyers donate air miles so people with serious illnesses can travel to treatment centers. While many of these programs are geared toward sick children, there are a number that also cater to adults. There are also several organizations that arrange free flights on private planes and corporate jets, including the Corporate Angel Network, the National Patient Air Transport Helpline and Air Care Alliance.
• Lodging Assistance.
  Most of the major treatment centers have negotiated medical rates with local hotels, motels and apartments so make sure you inquire about their lodging arrangements. This information can often be found on the medical center's website, or else ask your hospital representative about these programs. Another resource for lodging is the National Association of Hospital Hospitality Houses (www.nahhh.org). The NAHHH is an association of more than 150 nonprofit organizations located throughout the U.S. that provide family-centered lodging and support services to families and their loved ones who are receiving medical treatment far from their home communities.
