Financial Assistance for Mesothelioma Families
There are many sources of financial assistance for mesothelioma families, so you don't need to be concerned about affording high quality medical care. Here are some options you might consider:
- Legal Claims against manufacturers and employers. You might be eligible to obtain compensation from companies who knowingly exposed you, either as an employee or a consumer, to asbestos. Legal settlements are often large enough to cover medical and out-of-pocket expenses and provide financial security for families.
- Legal Claims against your Health Insurance Carrier. If you have a health insurance plan, make sure you identify the hospital staff member designated to assist people who have questions about hospital costs and medical insurance coverage (ask your nurse who handles these issues if you aren't familiar with them. If you believe that your insurance company is unfairly denying you coverage, you might consider taking legal action against them.
- Disability Claims. If you have private disability insurance through your employer or as part of your life insurance policy, you might consider filing a disability claim.
- Social Security Claims. You might have recourse to file a disability claim with social security.
- Worker's Compensation Claims. If you were exposed to asbestos on the job, you can file an additional claim for compensation against your employer through worker's compensation.
- Medicare and Medicaid. If you are over 65 or are disabled, you might get some help from Medicare coverage. Call them at your local Social Security office or the Medicare Hotline, 800-MEDICARE (800.633.4227). Your local Social Services office might also be able to help you determine if you are eligible for Medicaid. More information on Medicaid is available at the U.S. government website for Health Care Financing Administration at http://hfca.gov/medicaid/medicaid.htm.
If you decide to pursue any or several of these options, you are best advised to speak with an attorney with experience in mesothelioma litigation, particularly if you are interested filing a legal claim against a manufacturer or employer. Mesothelioma cases are complex, requiring special knowledge and expertise. Moreover, an experienced attorney can ensure that filing multiple claims will not challenge the legitimacy of any individual claim.
